Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is organizing a public lecture on “Food Security in an era of Climate Change”. The lecture will be delivered by the Father of Green Revolution in India, Prof. M.S. Swaminathan, Hon’ble Member of Parliament and Honorary Chairperson, Chair for Sustainable Development in the convention centre, IGNOU between 03:00 PM and 4:30 PM on 18th March, 2013.

The Hon’ble Minister for Human Resources Development, Dr. M. M. Pallam Raju will grace the occasion as chief guest and shall release the book “Evergreen Revolution in Agriculture: Pathway to a Green Economy” authored by Prof. P.C. Kesavan and Prof. M.S. Swaminathan.

Food and nutritional security is the need of the hour. Every country aspires to provide its citizens nutritive food and to meet this noble challenge, the agricultural planning process and food programme are structured. In the back drop of Government of India’s initiative in the form of National Food Security Bill, agricultural scientists and policy planners are strategizing the measures to augment the agricultural production and revamping the public distribution system. The country has witnessed an all time high of food grain production of 250 million tonnes in the last year.

The important challenges facing the country in the field of agriculture is sustainable agricultural production without any ecological harm. The country need to sustain its agricultural production in the back drop of declining soil productivity, agricultural pollution and climate change. The strategies like crop diversification, mixed farming practices, inclusion of climate resilient crops like nutria-cereals, dry land horticulture, etc. will pave way for progressive agricultural growth. The people at large must be sensitized about the nutritional security.
