The Benefits Of Distance Learning

Postby miku » Sat Mar 22, 2008 11:27 pm

Distance Learning or ‘Home Study’ has come a long way since Isaac Pitman taught shorthand via correspondence courses in the 1840s. However the huge benefits of studying from home, or from the workplace, remain the same.

First of all, with a Distance Learning course you enjoy the freedom of being able to study in your own time and at your own pace. That’s because Distance Learning courses are carefully designed to fit in with your life.

Whether you wish to improve your life, increase your job prospects or simply study a hobby that you are interested in, more and more people are choosing to study from home as it fits in comfortably with their lifestyle.

There are many fully-accredited Distance Learning providers in the UK today (type ‘distance learning’ ‘home study’ or ‘distance education’ into Google.co.uk and you’ll find most of them), offering a huge range of interesting, educational courses available for study.

Distance Education courses available for home study can include anything from Airline Training to Art Studies, Book-keeping to Business & Management, Counseling to Child Care and Writing to Web Design. You will find courses on things like Wedding Planning and Event Management, Nail Technician, Animal Care and Behaviour…even courses such as Diet & Exercise, Forensic Science and How to Start Your Own Business. On some vocational courses you may even qualify for a career Development Loan from the government.

But you are not alone when you study from home. Distance Learning providers (or Home Learning agencies as they are sometimes called) employ professional student advisors and fully qualified tutors to mark and help you with your coursework. Most Home Study courses provide learners with an accredited diploma which helps them increase their job prospects, change their lifestyle or even start their own business.

Many Distance Learning providers offer interest free credit schemes to help students spread the cost over a period they can afford. Also look out for special discount offers.

Looking for a better job, a better future, a better life? Then take up a Distance Learning course today and change your life forever!

I think the main message is this: there's not much excuse for not pursuing advanced education. We all have issues with money, time, and priorities. But, here I am working a full time job, running my business on the side, teaching online courses, and still taking graduate courses online. I'll have a new MS degree for a total time investment of around 13 months and a financial investment of less than $8,000, paid for out of my own pocket. So, for around $16,000 and some part-time work over 3-4 years, I'll have two Master's degrees in very different areas and will have never attended a live class or met an instructor or fellow student. That's pretty cool if you ask me.

f you enjoy life outside a large city, distance learning offers a wide range of topics and degrees you may not find locally. Many forms of distance learning provide students the option to participate whenever they wish, on an individualized basis. For example, some students may want to review a podcast in the middle of the night or read their e-mail during early morning hours. In addition, one student may wish to spend 30 minutes reviewing a website, while another spends an hour. There are some people who are keen to do a certain course but feel shy about joining a class. Hence, they choose to do distance learning courses because these courses do not require them to attend classes.

Distance learning allows students to choose one of the largest academic institutions in their learning. Distance education will also allow increased compensation and potential for promotion. Students have access to specialists and a large number of on-line databases, which are also advantages of distance learning. Instead of looking for hours of card catalogs and library stacks, students can use online search engines to find a host of experts, articles and research databases in seconds.

# Students have access to experts and tremendous volume of online databases, which are also distance learning benefits. Instead of searching for hours through card catalogs and library stacks, students can utilize online search engines to find countless experts' articles and research databases within seconds.
# Instructor communication is an additional distance learning benefit. With the evolution of e-mail and Internet chat rooms, instructor-student contact can be maintained and strengthened. This fosters a better educational experience for the distance learning student.

One of the benefits of distance learning is that there is a wide variety of materials that can meet everyone's learning preference -- at least part of the time. For example, some students learn from visual stimuli, such as video, and others learn best by listening or interacting with a computer program. If distance learning courses are well designed, they will likely offer learners a wide range of choices, thereby providing the optimal combinations of interaction and media.
