IGNOU > IGNOU Assignments > BCA > BCA 2007 Assignments >Intranet Administration IGNOU BCA Assignments Question 1: What is the purpose of DNS? What is the function of a secondary or tertiary DNS server? In which case will the lookups be transferred to additional DNS servers? Ans: Short for Domain Name System (or Service or Server), an Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses. Because domain names are alphabetic, they're easier to remember. The Internet however, is really based on IP addresses. Every time you use a domain name, therefore, a DNS service must translate the name into the corresponding IP address. For example, the domain name www.example.com might translate to 198.105.232.4. The purpose of DNS is to convert the names to the numbers so that the appropriate servers can be found, very much like a phone directory or an address book. When you use the internet to visit a website, you enter the domain name, like example.com, in a web browser. When you check your email, your email software will be checking a server with a name like mail.example.com (the "mail" part of mail.example.com is called a host name and usually indicates a specific function, like email). In order for your computer to display a website or show you your email, it must find the server responsible for the website, or the server responsible for holding your email. This whole process of finding servers is usually called DNS. Secondary DNS allows clients who are already managing their DNS through some other means (operating their own nameservers, using a webhost's nameservers, etc) to gain added reliability and improved uptime by also having their domain name information carried on easyDNS's renowned network of nameservers. Secondary DNS is useful only to those clients who manage their own primary nameserver, as it does not include any way to create the essential records for the function of a domain. The records have to be set up properly on a primary nameserver and copied as-is to our cluster of nameservers. The process of communication between nameservers is controlled by the top sections of the zone file, the SOA records and the NS records. When a change is made to the zone file on the primary nameserver, it sends a message or "notify packet" to the other nameservers for the domain, which it finds in the "NS records" of the zone file. When these nameservers receive this notification they reload the zone files from the primary, thus maintaining up to date information so they can function as authoritative nameservers for the domain. The first step in setting up secondary DNS is adding the domain to our system at the secondary DNS service level. Since it is separate from our normal DNS service, this is done through secondary.easydns.com. Once you click "next" after entering the domain name, you will be brought to a page asking for contact information. You would enter this if you do not currently have an easyDNS account, and go through a brief signup process. If you already have an account, you just need to click the link saying "If you are already a member, click here." and you will be asked to login to your account. You can currently transfer domains with .com, .org, .net, .biz, .info, and .ca domain extensions to easyDNS. You should:
transfers must be confirmed by the admin contact email address of the domain name so look for the confirmation email or notify the admin contact to expect one and how to handle it. Also, a few registrars require their clients to acknowledge a transfer of registrars prior to releasing the name. If the registrant does not provide confirmation to these registrars, the losing registrar will consistently deny the transfer request. |
